Meet Chandler Windham
I am a self-taught artist who has been drawing superheroes and creating their backgrounds, personalities, and stories since I was five years old. The universe now known as Robot Afro Press began in my imagination as a child. It existed under many different names over the years, but none of them truly stuck—until now.
In the early 1980s, I attended my first comic-book convention in downtown New York City. Before I left home, my father gave me fifty dollars. My three siblings stood around me and warned that if I spent that money on comic books, I was a fool—and I would no longer be their sibling.
I held my ground then, and I’ve been repping the culture ever since.
The characters and worlds that would eventually become Robot Afro Press, displayed in my workspace around 2014—one stage of a creative journey that began when I was five years old.
Over the course of my life, I have created dozens of original characters and stories. What you see on Robot Afro Press represents only a fraction of the larger creative universe that has lived in my mind and on my drawing boards for decades.
My work has also moved beyond my own workspace. One of my characters appeared in comic-book artist Dave Ryan’s War of the Independents #2, published by Red Anvil Press. In 2016, I released a physical edition of Mousetronautz #1. I also spent several years teaching children how to create their own comics through a California after-school program.
A lifetime of drawing has taken a toll on my hands. Today, AI has become a valuable creative tool that allows me to continue exploring, developing, and refining my ideas. Every character featured by Robot Afro Press was created in a human mind. These characters began with my drawings, stories, and imagination; the technology of my time is helping me continue the work I started as a child.
Robot Afro Press is not an AI brand, and the characters showcased here were not created by a machine. This is an independent creative universe built from human imagination and carried forward with the tools now available to me.
My goal is to connect with talented artists, writers, and other creative people who see something in these characters and believe in what this universe can become. If you would like to help bring these stories fully to life and become part of the future of Robot Afro Press, I would like to hear from you.
